From Venice Marco Airport to the city of Venice and Mestre (the town on the mainland facing Venice where many people have their hotel accommodation) you have a choice of transfer options by bus or water transport.
For those staying in Venice itself, it is not the straight forward choice an initial look suggests, between a relatively cheap bus or indulging yourself in arriving in style by water.
As Venice is totally pedestrianised with the only transport being water based the airport bus will drop you off at the western tip of Venice where the causeway from the mainland arrives on Venice.
The bus station here at Piazzale Roma is literally end of the road. The odds are your accommodation will be another 2-3km away by local Vaporetto (water bus) services.
The direct water launch services between Venice Airport and Venice itself on the other hand have stops dotted all over Venice, so with careful hotel selection you may be able to walk with your luggage directly to your hotel. There is also for the ultimate in convenience a water taxi service.
All options have various sources where you can buy tickets, but as a fall-back there is always the public transport ticket office in the airport arrivals hall at Marco Polo airport.
There are two separate dedicated airport bus services between Venice Marco Polo Airport and Venice and Mestre. The service between the bus station at Venice (Piazzale Roma) and the airport runs at least twice an hour and takes 20 minutes.
The service from outside Mestre Railway Station and the airport runs more frequently and takes again around 20 minutes. As you can see from the picture at the top of the page, the bus has a luggage hold and your ticket includes your large bags.

ACTV run slower, cheaper stopping buses between Venice (Piazzale Roma) and the airport.
A public water bus (vaporetto) service runs from the airport dock to Venice and the outlying main islands (Murano, Burano, Lido).
Within the passenger terminal at Venice Airport is a separate area for the water services with a large electronic departures and arrivals board just like for the aircraft.
There are 5 services in total serving all the main islands. The beauty of this service is that there will be a stop quite close to your accommodation in Venice, which is highly unlikely if you take the airport bus service.

Airport - Murano : One-way - €8, Return €15
Airport - Lido or Venice Cruise Terminal : One-way - €15, Return €27

Unless your hotel is in Mestre on the mainland, or your hotel is close to Piazzale Roma where the road from the mainland across the causeway to Venice ends, at least part of your transfer will be by water.
Next to Piazzale Roma is also Venice railway station and the cruise terminal, also both accessible by vehicle.
The ultimate transfer solution between Venice Airport and your Venice Hotel is a private water taxi door to door to or from your hotel in Venice.
If your hotel has no direct water access, your water taxi driver will drop you at the most convenient stop available for your Venice hotel.
The service operates 24/7 and each boat can accommodate a maximum of 6 passengers with luggage.
There is a large choice by private vehicle to Mestre, Piazzale Roma and Venice cruise terminal and also bundles of private vehicles to Piazzale Roma, then a boat to your Venice hotel.
Make your airport transfer a highlight of your Venice break by arriving in style by water or save money by road.
