Sorrento is the largest resort town on the Neapolitan Riviera attracting a wide mix of visitors from package tour operators to domestic holidaymakers to independent visitors taking a few days break from cultural trips to Rome and Florence.
The town itself sits at the southern end of a large plateaux on top of cliffs with port and a beach a long way below. The main town, shopping area, and station is above the port on the cliffs.
South of Sorrento the hotel belt extends several kilometres along the coast past Sant Agnello to the next headland.
If you are visiting independently and want to do more than just flop out by the pool then staying in Sorrento is a big, big plus for getting out and about.
Trains from Sorrento station will take you quickly and cheaply to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples. The good local bus network has its hub by Sorrento train station and services enable you quick and cheap access to the lemon groves and marvellous walking tracks and villages on your doorstep.
Buses to Amalfi and Positano tend to fill up at Sorrento, trying to board at an outlying area often means the bus just passes you by full up with passengers.

Hotel accommodation in Sorrento is diverse and generally good quality with a bias towards large old 4-star type hotels a lot of which have an atmosphere of tourism from a few decades ago. In this day and age of buffets, waiter service still prevails in most hotel restaurants.
Room rates are very dynamic with wide variations during the year, many hotels are not open all year, some, serving the domestic holiday season have restricted opening dates. Additionally, at peak times some hotels require you to book 2 or 3 nights' stay at a time, as is the case on some of our featured hotels, below.
If you are bringing your own vehicle or hiring a car, looking at the hotels outside Sorrento is probably going to be a good move. As well as easy parking, you will be rewarded with much lower room rates than in Sorrento Town and most hotels are on the hillside with stupendous views over the Bay of Naples from their restaurants and swimming pools.
