Cinque Terre is made up of five fishing villages along the coast of the Italian Riviera. The Cinque Terre region is over 125km (75mi) west from Florence.
By train it is not really advisable as a day trip, it'll be 2-3 hours' travel time in each direction.
The key five fishing villages include Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, all tiny towns built upon steep rugged cliffs overlooking the sea. Cars are banned.
If you are a keen hiker, then the Cinque Terre region is one of the places to come in Italy for an extended stay. There is a network of challenging paths in addition to the main coastal path that crosses the entire region. A scenic railway links the villages together along the coast.

Known for its beauty and charm, Cinque Terre draws people year round to walk along its scenic coastal path, "Lovers Lane", to enjoy the views and romantic atmosphere.
Rooted in antiquity, Cinque Terre's five villages date from the early medieval period. Monterosso, the oldest, was founded in AD 643.
Much of what remains in the villages today dates from the late High Middle Ages, including several castles and a quintet of illustrious parish churches.

his tour includes coach transportation, rail and boat travel between villages, entry in to Cinque Terre National Park and a delicious lunch.
The ancient trails are rough but manageable. Be prepared for the hiking – although the path is open to everyone, remember that the ground can be slippery, uneven, and in places steep and narrow.

The day's walking is in several stages with stops at villages in between with free time to sample wines and cheeses, even swim if you bring a costume.

After your visit to Vernazza, there is a shared boat ride to Riomaggiore. While on the boat, view the dramatic coastline from the water, framed against the hills
Riomaggiore is the most southern village of the Cinque Terre and its houses are built along the cliff face. Follow your tour escort for a walk around the village and then travel to pretty Manarola.
Manarola is one of the oldest villages of the Cinque Terre. Explore the narrow alleys and pretty pastel squares that epitomise the beauty of the area, and perhaps sample some renowned local wine at a cosy wine bar (own expense).
