Cinque Terre is made up of five fishing villages along the coast of the Italian Riviera. The Cinque Terre region is over 125km (75mi) west from Florence.
By train it is not really advisable as a day trip, it'll be 2-3 hours' travel time in each direction.

The key five fishing villages include Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, all tiny towns built upon steep rugged cliffs overlooking the sea. Cars are banned.
If you are a keen hiker, then the Cinque Terre region is one of the places to come in Italy for an extended stay. There is a network of challenging paths in addition to the main coastal path that crosses the entire region. A scenic railway links the villages together along the coast.

The ancient trails are rough but manageable. Be prepared for the hiking – although the path is open to everyone, remember that the ground can be slippery, uneven, and in places steep and narrow.
Walking boots or at minimum sneakers, closed toe shoes with non slip soles are required. A large amount of walking is involved, you must be of average fitness and able to keep up with the rest of the group. Minimum age is 12 years.
The day's walking is in several stages with stops at villages in between with free time to sample wines and cheeses, even swim if you bring a costume.
On the cliff top village of Corniglia a delicious lunch made of fresh Mediterranean seafood and the most authentic pesto pasta is served in a local restaurant with a perfect view of the sea and surrounding hillside.
At Monterosso, you enjoy a scenic 40-minute boat ride (weather permitting) along the shores of the Cinque Terre as the journey takes you to Riomaggiore.

Riomaggiore is the most southern village of the Cinque Terre and its houses are built along the cliff face. Follow your tour escort for a walk around the village and then travel to pretty Manarola.
Manarola is one of the oldest villages of the Cinque Terre. Explore the narrow alleys and pretty pastel squares that epitomise the beauty of the area, and perhaps sample some renowned local wine at a cosy wine bar (own expense).
After visiting Manarola, leave the Cinque Terre and make your way back Florence where you'll arrive in the early evening.
