Amalfi and Positano ports

The scenery on the other (southern) side of the Sorrento peninsular is indeed impressive, more often than not exceeding expectations of visitors.

The sheer dramatic cliffs of the Amalfi Coast and the small villages that cling on to this coastline are a feast for the eyes. The two main towns that have small ports where boat services go are Positano and Amalfi.

From Sorrento, by far the most popular way to experience the drama of the coastline of the Amalfi Coast is by the SITA public bus service between Sorrento and Amalfi that stops at Positano on the way.

The SITA bus follows the dramatic coastal road, a memorable journey and a highlight for most that travel.

But bus is not the only option. There are scheduled boat services between Sorrento and Amalfi and Positano and of course coach tours are freely available from hotels and agencies in Sorrento.

For the ultimate in freedom and a truly memorable experience, you can book a private tour from Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast with or without a guide. If you have a group of up to eleven, prices can become competitive and as good value as a regular coach tour.

Ferry services between Sorrento and Positano/Amalfi

In the summer season scheduled boat services make the voyage between Sorrento and Positano and Amalfi. Boats depart from the Marina Piccola at Sorrento Port, the same location that all the other ferry services to Capri depart from.

You could go one way by bus, the other by boat. There are also trips from both Positano and Amalfi where you can view the coastline from the sea.

The most popular and the cheapest way to take in the Amalfi coast is by the public bus service.

Buses depart from in front of Sorrento Railway Station at quite high frequencies, timetables are at our dedicated page linked below.

Different buses take different routes over to the south coast before doing the scenic coastal road. It's about 60 minutes to Positano and 90 minutes to Amalfi.

Positano is arguably the more scenic town to stop off at, but the coastal road is quite high up above the shoreline. It's thus a steep walk down through the town and a steep hill back up again, though there are town buses in Positano that go lower.

The bus terminus at Amalfi is right down in the centre of town on the shoreline itself.

It should be said that the buses are popular. In the mornings, buses routinely leave full from Sorrento Station often with passengers standing in the aisle. If you are sitting on the left side of the bus you may miss some of the finest views as a result.

It really is worthwhile going to Sorrento train station and boarding the bus there, anywhere else and the bus may just pass you by already full up.

It is not unknown for the coast road to be blocked by roadworks or rock falls. The bus is normally rerouted on these occasions along the northern coast, then over the mountain into Amalfi without visiting Positano.
