Vatican City hotels are readily found just outside the Vatican City walls in the Prati district, a middle-class suburb just north and north east of the Vatican itself.
There are numerous small affordable pensions in the area offering relatively cheap and good quality accommodation, these we discuss in a separate dedicated page for budget hotels near to the Vatican.
On this page the focus is on the many standard three and four star hotels that abound around Vatican City.
There are very few chain hotels with familiar names in the district. Perhaps the notable exceptions are the two NH hotels listed below and two Best Western franchised hotels also listed below.
What to expect from 3- and 4-star hotels near the Vatican in Rome
There is a Crowne Plaza hotel called the Crown Plaza St Peter's which despite its name is about 3 kms (2 miles) from the Vatican itself. However, just going this short way away from the city does reward you with very good value rates. The grounds of the Crowne Plaza are also more spacious than anything you will get in the city and has room for facilities like a swimming pool.
The Prati area where most of the hotels are is a middle class area abounding in shopping streets less expensive than those found in central Rome. Line A of the Rome Metro cuts right through the middle of the district with three stations, so you are never far away from quick transport over the river to the ancient city of Rome itself.
From most hotels you can walk over to the river to the ancient city of Rome and places like the Trevi Fountain in about fifteen minutes.
The ancient city of Rome is walkable from the Vatican, although many buses are available. We have a delightful short walk from St Peter's Square to Piazza Navona opening up all the sights of Rome beyond.
Transfers to hotels in this area using public transport are not the greatest. SIT run an airport bus service from Fiumicino Airport and for those arriving on a cruise ship at Rome's cruise port Civitavecchia the stopping trains from Civitavecchia stop at S. Pietro station on the other side of the Vatican itself from most hotels.
The main arrival point in Rome is Termini Station that as well as being the main train station in Rome is also the terminus for the main airport buses. Termini Station is the other side of the city centre from the Vatican, connected by Line A of Rome's crowded Metro system.
